Ramazan

Essay on Ramazan For All Classes (English & Urdu)

Ramazan has always been a special time of year for me. Ramazan is the most blessed month in Islam & its importance has been deeply rooted in its history. Ramazan is a month of fasting, referred to as the Sawm in Islam. It is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar & is observed by Muslims all around the world. It is believed that the revelation of the Qur’an took place in this month & thus, fasting has always been of huge significance in Islamic culture & history.

History of Fasting

The concept of fasting wasn’t exclusive to Islam, though it was well-known even before the advent of the religion. Ancient populations around the world, from Egypt to Greece, practised fasting in various forms as a way to bring spiritual insight, atonement, or purification. Ancient nomadic tribes have also been reported to observe food deprivation as a way to retain physical & mental strength. For example, Plato described fasting as “the greatest of all purifications”.

Significance of Ramadan

It is believed that during this time of the year, Almighty Allah will forgive sins & make the pious closer to Him. It is also believed that fasting helps individuals to become better Muslims, as they learn to resist worldly temptations. Ramadan also helps one to connect to the monotheistic tenants of Islam, as Muslims refrain from engaging in idolatry & instead focus on the worship of one God.
Muslims must take this opportunity to practice patience, kindness & humility in order to grow closer to Allah & feel spiritually fulfilled. It is also said that those who observe the fast, are rewarded by Allah. During Ramadan, Muslims are encouraged to read the Quran more often, utter more prayers & also practice charity, with Zakat being an important part of the practice of fasting.

Ramazan & Fasting in Islam

But it was in Islam that fasting was fully established in its present form. The practice is mentioned in several verses of the Qur’an & is mentioned as one of the five pillars of the religion, along with testifying faith in God and Hazrat Muhammad SAWW, prayer, giving alms, & pilgrimage to Mecca if you are physically & financially able.

Fasting in Ramadan

Muslims observe the Sawm each day during the month of Ramazan, abstaining completely from food & drink between dawn & sunset, apart from medical & health reasons. During this month, Muslims engage in many activities besides fasting, such as reciting the Qur’an, conducting special charity & increasing acts of worship. Fasting is incredibly beneficial to the practitioner & acts as a major spiritual exercise. It increases one’s spiritual strength, teaches them self-control & discipline, encourages them to be aware of God’s commands & completely clears all distractions.

Eid ul Fitr The Reward of Fasting in Ramazan

It is said that with fasting comes immense reward. At the end of the fasting month of Ramazan, Muslims celebrate the Eid-ul-Fitr, a joyous festive occasion. On this special occasion, Muslims offer prayers of thanks & gratitude to God, who has made it possible for them to complete the holy fast & reward them with innumerable blessings. On this day, ummah (the global Muslim community) celebrates with long prayers, feast & celebrations & a special Eid exchange of gifts.

Health Benefits of Ramazan

Aside from the spiritual benefits, fasting also benefits our physical health. During the fast, no food or liquid goes into our bodies & thus, the metabolic process slows down. The body begins to be more efficient & cells start to heal faster. As metabolism slows down, the body takes up fewer calories & this helps in weight loss. Fasting breaks down the old hardened cells & makes the body healthier & younger. It also helps cleanse the body of harmful toxins & purify the blood. Additionally, fasting also helps stabilize our blood sugar levels, lower cholesterol levels & reduce the risk of heart diseases.

In short, Ramadan is an important pillar of the Islamic faith & provides an invaluable opportunity for spiritual growth. Fasting is an ancient practice, but at least for me, Ramadan has proven to be much more than refusing from food & drinks. It provides one with a chance to pause, reflect & reconnect to our Creator.

This blessed month provides us with a reminder of our purpose & transforms us in spiritual terms that last beyond the mere 30 days. This is why I love Ramadan, for it reminds us why we are here & of our spiritual journey.
